Gotta love a company with a sense of humor. Last October the world was predicting hard times ahead for MySQL AB after Oracle bought InnoBase OY, the developer of the InnoBase engine that is a major component of MySQL.
Happily, Oracle/InnoBase renewed its contract with MySQL for "several years", allowing MySQL to continue integrating InnoBase even as it moves ahead with its aggressive program to integrate many more database engines into MySQL. The end result of the InnoBase scare is a stronger MySQL company and product.
A polite CEO is sure to thank anyone who helps strengthen his company, and MySQL CEO Mårten Mickos is probably the most polite CEO I've ever met. Mårten was all smiles at our dinner this past Wednesday, having just arrived from the MySQL Users Conference where he named Oracle as one of MySQL's three "Partners of the Year", much to the surprise and amusement of the audience (especially since he had just finished calling Oracle's new "Express" product "worthless crippleware"). All eyes were on Oracle VP Ken Jacobs, who was in the audience and had no choice but to gamely take the stage and accept the "award" from his competitor.
Mårten tells me he invited Larry Ellison to a "closing dinner" to celebrate their new partnership, but much to his surprise has not yet received Larry's RSVP. I'd love a ticket to that dinner - and if invited I'll happily contribute a magnum of 1998 Harlan Estate to the festivities!
